Which genres actually work in five-minute bursts

People ask me what to play when they only have a few minutes. The honest answer depends entirely on genre, because some games punish you for stepping away.

Casual and puzzle games are the obvious pick — you can stop mid-thought and lose nothing. Turn-based RPGs like Emberfall Chronicle are surprisingly good for this too, since the game literally waits for you between moves.

Strategy sims like Iron Tide Command and Skyport Tycoon also suit short sessions because they're about planning, not reflexes. You check in, make a few decisions, and close the app without anxiety.

The genres that fight this are racers and action games. Neon Drift Rally is a blast, but a track takes a couple of focused minutes and pausing mid-drift feels wrong. Match the genre to your free time and you'll enjoy both more.
